The key midnight can be a different kind of a Koontz novel, but is also exciting and fascinating as his later work. It is very well written, with smart character design, internal and external conflicts, and seeks to bulk. The pace is perfect, because it encourages the reader to devour every word with an increased tremble as the plot progresses.
